Jenkintown is an engaged community

Hi Reader,

I haven't written as much as I would like to, but it's great to talk to so many people in person. I'm sending this email from a new email service (ConvertKit) so that I can simplify the process.

But first...

Right now (as I resend this) there's a carwash going on to raise funds for Grace Church's youth trip to Montana. I got this text: "The youth CAR WASH today will be in little parking lot by the Chapel. 9 - 2!"

The 32nd Annual Jenkintown Sunset 5K Run will be held Tuesday evening, June 4th at 7:00 PM at the Town Square, presented by the Jenkintown Kiwanis Club.

Jenkintown celebrated Senior Athletes

Chris O'Brien, Jenkintown's Athletic Director, trainer and friend has served Jenkintown well and will be leaving his position. The High School Senior Athletic Awards Ceremony recognized Chris time and again. He will be missed!

Jenkintown coaches were amazing in the they celebrated our student athletes, their qualities and their futures as leaders.

Some Borough notes

The Planning Commission is working on short term rentals, and Lucinda Bartley, with help from Marley Bice has put a lot of effort into this. Marley is our support person from the County.

Parking has been an issue in Jenkintown since the 60's (or before?). I think Jenkintown will successfully address parking someday, but maybe it will take a broader discussion about mobility and transportation. In the meantime, there's parking at Cedar and Greenwood that you can rent by the month.

We have new staff focused on traffic enforcement. Parking against the flow of traffic is being enforced. The police department is looking at alternatives to meters for next year.

The Borough has requested that the GCLGS (DCED) Governor’s Center for Local Government Services Department of Community and Economic Development provide an outside assessment of our public safety services – police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS).

This evening was Prom!

Here's a photo of the seniors just before Prom in the Chachkin/Russakoff's backyard. The Senior Parents Potluck was held at the Munson's.

Final thoughts

Another Dad's camping trip near the Delaware Water Gap is on the books. Glenn Williams stayed up all night working on the pig roast as always, and people are already thinking about next year. Sorry I couldn't make it this year. My daughter Kate was doing her internship.

Tonight is the Jenkintown Newcomers Progressive Dinner. This is a Jenkintown community institution that has endured.

And last but not least, Jenkintown Youth Activities (JYA), keeps producing leaders who make our community stronger.

Thank you everyone for being so engaged!

Steve

Hi Reader, I realize not everyone wants these emails, so feel free to unsubscribe at the end of this email. Sometimes we ask questions to ponder whether there is a better solution. If someone in the Borough asks, "What would be better than we have now?" Does this question mean that what we currently have is bad? No. You can just be curious. Walking meetups Walking is a way to talk about problems and options that might lead to improvements. I want to follow up from last week, first by saying...

Hi Reader I've been writing up my perspective on parking in Jenkintown, the budget process, street lights, and the new trail and sidewalk along Washington Ave. These aren't ready to share, and I want to get this info out to you in case you're not aware. Tonight there is a presentation about the DCED study: Police Cost to Benefit Analysis. Here's the pdf that was shared via the Borough's email. Here's a clip from Manager Locke's email:The DCED presentation will take place in person at...

Hi Reader, Sorry I didn't get an email out for the last couple of months. I hope you are well. Tonight at Borough Hall is an important meeting at 7 pm. It's about parking. We're looking for opportunities and solutions to make parking better (as opposed to complaints). Some core areas relate to municipal code, permit parking and digital payments. As of September 15, our bank no longer takes quarters. Kudos I think Borough staff, committees and my fellow Council members are doing a good job....
