Hi Reader, I realize not everyone wants these emails, so feel free to unsubscribe at the end of this email. Sometimes we ask questions to ponder whether there is a better solution. If someone in the Borough asks, "What would be better than we have now?" Does this question mean that what we currently have is bad? No. You can just be curious. Walking meetupsWalking is a way to talk about problems and options that might lead to improvements. I want to follow up from last week, first by saying that I'm open to going for walks with people at 6 am. My favorite former Congressman, Earl Blumenauer, used to do early morning running meetings around DC. It's more engaging than meeting over coffee and has health benefits. Report follow upIf you read the Police Cost Benefit Analysis, please let me know if you had any thoughts. I'm just curious. A bike ride?A lot of people don't realize how easy it is to get to the Pennypack Trail and Lorimer Park by bicycle. Here's my route. If you want a personal guide, I'm happy to bike with you to the trail.
Walking to/from Abington - Great improvementsAnd here is a map of a trail/sidewalk/drainage project that State Representative Ben Sanchez began and Abington Commissioner Stuart Winegrad saw to completion. Abington Township Staff did the work in-house and the workmanship is outstanding.
Parking updates - working on code
We are using Park Mobile now, just like Abington and Cheltenham. Meters have gone away for several reasons. They break and you can't buy new replacement parts. They take quarters, but our bank doesn't. They are a time suck, requiring two people to empty them. Parking is enforced from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. There are now several free 20 minute parking spaces for in/out stops and for deliveries. On-street parkingSince the pandemic, it's been harder to find residential on-street parking. People brought up several reasons for this at a special parking meeting. Parking permits for residents and non-residents don't seem to solve the problem. Permits push the problem from one street to another. I wonder if there's a way to charge non-resident vehicles for parking without forcing residents to buy permits. Road safety in Ward 1Kevin McCreary Jr. was killed last year while bicycling through Jenkintown. Here's an article about why we don't have safe roads.
While Montgomery County published a guide for municipalities to create safer streets for everyone, it isn't applicable to York Road. Speed cameras would be. I used to be a skeptic of speed cameras. They have reduced fatalities on Roosevelt Blvd in Philadelphia, but it takes a vote in the state legislature to make them happen. Please feel free to reach out. Steve ps. I use this email list to share my perspective as a member of Borough Council. I won't be offended if you unsubscribe below. Feel free to reply to this email if you need to reach out. |
Let's use maps to have better conversations. And let's build local communities by talking about shared opportunities as well as concerns.
Hi Reader, Last night Jenkintown Borough Council moved to advertise the updated Borough Parking Ordinance. I want to express my appreciation to everyone: Residents who invested time into coming up with solutions, Borough staff who answered questions, business and property owners who sought clarification, and fellow council members. Last night, Cedar Street residents spoke with clarity about their concerns and advocated for a solution. Thank you. Communication is a process If you were to get...
Hi Reader, Some background To help make sense of things, I make maps. We (the Borough in public meetings) have been talking about parking over the last 9 months. Basically, we put together a comprehensive ordinance to address a lot of problems with the current ordinance. This email is to try to answer some questions and deal with misconceptions. My personal map made from proposed code revisions. As I write this, I got an email as well as another email complaining about a lack of response. I...
Hi Reader I've been writing up my perspective on parking in Jenkintown, the budget process, street lights, and the new trail and sidewalk along Washington Ave. These aren't ready to share, and I want to get this info out to you in case you're not aware. Tonight there is a presentation about the DCED study: Police Cost to Benefit Analysis. Here's the pdf that was shared via the Borough's email. Here's a clip from Manager Locke's email:The DCED presentation will take place in person at...
